Meet Michael
Hi, I'm Michael NOLAN, Councillor Candidate for Bellevue Ward.
Living in Bellevue
I currently live in Kew East and have lived here for 26 years, bringing my family up in Bellevue.
I’m an engineer and I’ve been a project director in manufacturing. I’ve led large teams developing major infrastructure and worked to reduce emissions and make large facilities energy efficient. My experience will be invaluable to bringing improved project governance discipline & more responsible spending to Council. I will work to keep rates low and prioritise what community wants. My wife and partner Rosemary has worked in senior roles in the disability sector for 18 years.
We very much enjoy being a part of the community and like to support the local Traders and walk & ride around Bellevue, Boroondara.
I've given 20+ years of service to my community, often in leadership roles. You can read more about this below.
Project management and national management experience
I have worked as a capital projects and infrastructure director across Australia and New Zealand for major food producers, and later in a national engineering role for a cold-storage and warehousing company. As well, I have worked extensively in reducing energy costs and electricity procurement within industry, and initiated projects to eliminate harmful refrigerants.
Education and Associations:
Bachelor of Engineering (Mech, Uni of MEL); Sustainability Essentials for Executives (Distinction, Uni of NSW); Masters Environment & Planning (part-completed, RMIT); various Project Management qualifications (including Kepner Tregoe, working in Prince II). Various Community Committees - including Hays Paddock Advisory Committee, Lighter Footprints Co-convenor, Kew East PS general committee.
Local Community involvement:
Locally, I have been involved in the community for 20+ years in a number of community organizations. Including:
-
Kew East Primary School (KEPS) - General committee
-
Kew East Primary School (KEPS) - co-founder of the environment team
-
Auskick co-coach - Kew Comets
-
Co-coach - under-age Kew East Basketball team.
-
Lighter Footprints Inc – local climate and environment action group. Involvement in various sub-groups, Co-Convenor for 4 years.
-
Electrify Boroondara – inaugural Steering Group member.
-
4th Kew Scouts – assisting key leader for 3 years.
I have been involved in a number of successful community campaigns since 2002 to preserve and enhance the character of Hays Paddock, East Kew, near where I live, including being on the Hays Paddock Advisory Committee that:
-
preserved the character of Hays Paddock, maintaining the mix of informal recreation and formal recreation in the Hays Paddock/Glass Creek area (rather than turning it into a sports precinct like Stradbroke Park).
-
saved the original Pavilion, and agreed to the design for renovation and extension of the main Pavilion.
-
provided new BBQ and picnic areas
-
achieved safer access across Glass Creek to Hays Paddock
